Course Overview

This intensive one-day course provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills in venepuncture (blood sampling). You'll learn safe, effective techniques for obtaining blood samples while ensuring patient comfort and maintaining specimen integrity.

With extensive hands-on practice using realistic training arms and under expert supervision, you'll develop the confidence and competence needed to perform venepuncture safely in clinical practice.

The course covers anatomy and physiology, infection control, patient communication, vein selection, venepuncture technique, specimen handling, and management of complications.

What You'll Learn

  • Anatomy and physiology of the venous system
  • Indications and contraindications for venepuncture
  • Infection prevention and aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT)
  • Patient identification, consent, and communication
  • Selecting appropriate equipment and blood collection systems
  • Vein selection and palpation techniques
  • Venepuncture procedure - step-by-step technique
  • Order of draw for multiple samples
  • Sample labeling and documentation
  • Recognition and management of complications
  • Needle stick injury prevention and response
  • Professional, legal, and ethical responsibilities
